The University of Lethbridge extends its sincere condolences to the friends, family and former colleagues and students of Professor Emerita Sara Stanley, who passed away in Lethbridge on April 1 at the age of 80.

Stanley, an assistant professor in the drama department in the Faculty of Fine Arts from July 1, 1983, until July 31, 2008, was a pioneering figure in the world of theatre and academia.

Born and raised in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, she journeyed from her home to the rugged landscapes of Alaska and eventually to southern Alberta. She was the first female instructor in the drama program and also the first female director in the Mainstage series. Stanley directed a wide range of productions from Waiting for the Parade in 1982 to her final play, Alice, in 1996.

At her request, no formal funeral will be held. Instead of flowers, donations can be made in Sara’s name to the Faculty of Fine Arts at ulethbridge.ca/giving.

In honour of Stanley, ULethbridge will lower its flags on Wednesday, April 10.
